World records set by swimmers from southern Africa

A number of swimmers from southern Africa have set world records - starting with Karen Muir. On August 10, 1965, at the age of 12 years, 10 months and 25 days - Karen Muir became the youngest person ever to set a world record in swimming. She went on the to set 16 world records. The occasion was the heats of the junior girls 110yds backstroke, English ASA Championships, Blackpool, England.

At age 12 - Karen had been refused permission to swim in the senior event - because she was too young!
