As a seperate compitive sport, swimming has been a central part of the annual National Championships right from the start. The earliest recorded club is Queens Park, founded in Durban in 1893, with the Port Elizabeth Amateur Swimming Association following in 1899. In Rhodesia 5 clubs were present at the founding of their national body in 1915. Other clubs followed, and the Nationals - known as 'Currie Cup' after the trophy donated by Sir Donald Currie awarded to the winner of the inter provincial water polo competition - was staged from 1900.
