Vikings swimmer, coach, selected for SA

EAST LONDON -- Two members of the East London swimming club, Vikings, swimmer Russell Kellermann and coach Andrew Gray, will shortly fly out to Rio de Janeiro with the senior South African squad for the South American leg of the World Cup swimming tournament.

The four-day event starts on November 25.

Kellermann, 19, an information technology student, will swim in the 50m and 100m free, 50m butterfly as well as relays at the event.

He was vice-captain of the SA Schools squad last year at the Asia-Pacific age-group gala in Taiwan where he broke an existing Taiwanese national record in the 50m freestyle when he came second in the finals.

Overall he gained a silver medal.

He was placed in the SA squad for special training after doing well at the senior nationals in April.

The squad had to undergo gruelling performance testing monitored by Swimming SA.

Kellermann has shown great potential throughout his swimming career and has featured in the top 10 swimmers in his age group for a number of years.

Gray, 38, has been coaching for nine years.

Originally from Durban he has been in East London for the past three years and as well as the Vikings club, he coaches at Stirling and Clarendon schools.

One of four brothers who represented South Africa at swimming, of whom two are coaches of repute, he is the son of Frank Gray who coached world record-holder, Karen Muir, in the 1960s.

Gray holds a world masters championship title for the 400m free style (age group 30-34) which he won at Indianapolis, US in 1992 and he also gained national colours for surf life-saving.

" I was overjoyed to hear of my selection as senior coach for the World Cup squad," Gray enthused. "Two of my brothers, Simon and Nicky, have coached representative teams overseas, so I am keeping the family tradition going."
